Dr. Christopher's herbal tooth and gum powder

This synergistic blend of herbs contains white oak bark, oat straw, prickly ash, bayberry bark, horsetail, slippery elm bark, comfrey root, lobelia, cloves, peppermint and stevia.

Formula used to help strengthen the gums and tighten loose teeth, as tooth powder for brushing teeth and/or gum pack. Said to fight bad breath, periodontal and other dental disease.

Uncle Harry’s tooth powder

Based on traditional recipes used by native cultures, these are hand-crafted products made with natural ingredients.

Dentalmiracle® tooth powder

Made with bactericidal Juniperus Communis fruit, inflammation-soothing and tissue-forming calendula flower, healing, soothing and deodorizing Aloe Vera and other herbs. Vegan. Said to work against bad breath incl. smoker’s breath, plaque build-up and dental sensitivity. Can be used as a gargle.

Eco-Dent (formerly Merfluan) tooth powder

contains standbys such as sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), sea salt, peppermint oil, myrrh resin extract, as well as tartaric acid, calcium and magnesium carbonate, menthol, and more. Also available in non-mint flavours, effervescent.

Tooth powders: general

There are many different tooth powders available. Healing Teeth Naturally doesn't endorse any particular one but recommends to look for organic and/or wild-crafted ingredients. You can also make your own, see Toothpaste alternatives.

Also compare this impressive testimonial: herbal tooth and gum powders heal serious chronic periodontitis (gum disease with loss of teeth) (after twice daily brushing using conventional toothpaste failed).

Ipsab: herbal gum and teeth remedy

In many of his health readings, Edgar Cayce recommended a solution he called Ipsab as a gums and tooth treatment or tonic incl. in diluted form for developing teeth. While there were slight variations in the Ipsab formula given, generally it called for prickly ash bark (known as "toothache bark" to the American Indians), salt, calcium chloride, peppermint, and iodine[4].

Reportedly has been effective against gum inflammation and periodontal pockets.

Instructions: massage into the gums or use as a mouth rinse diluted with water.

Mastic

A unique dental helper for all who require more dental exercise. See Mastic gum (resin): healthy chewing gum alternative - natural jaw exerciser, breath freshener, bacterial plaque fighter, gum helper, tooth whitener - with unique medical benefits.

Silvitis

A crystal-clear liquid composed of camphor, menthol, thymol etc. which has shown astounding effects on inflammatory processes such as jaw abcesses, gingivitis, stomatitis and others, see A forgotten but powerful anti-inflammatory for topical use based on natural ingredients. Only available from the Dutch manufacturer.

Good Gums Natural Dentifrice Powder & Dietary Supplement

A combination product containing baking soda, myrrh, peppermint, cinnamon, cranberry, French grey sea salt, vitamin C & bioflavonoid complex. Free of harsh abrasives, hormones, fluoride, antibiotics and artificial colouring or flavors.

Customers report both excellent results in gum and tooth health (including reversing a 30-year-history of gum recession [likely due to stopping the use of conventional toothpaste]) as well as some duds (as probably with any other product).

Ultimate Gum Solution

Developed by a long-term periodontal disease sufferer and endorsed by a number of enthusiastic users for stopping serious gum disease from advancing, healing bleeding, retracted gums and sensitive teeth, getting gums in top shape, making teeth feel strong, reducing yellowing, relieving a killer toothache, no more cavities, whitening children's teeth, avoiding future gum surgery, and stopping bad breath and cold sores.

One person reported having had major periodontal surgery twice which did not solve the problem[2]. When he finally lost a tooth, he began to use the product, preceded by rinsing twice with warm salt water[3] after meals. He experienced immediate results, with no more looseness in his teeth and his gums feeling firm and healthy.

(Apparently, Ultimate Gum Solution is not the cheapest product out there.)

Dr. Wolfe's aloe-based dental care products

Holistic dentist Dr. Bill Wolfe has used both homeopathy and whole-leaf aloe vera concentrate in his practice for many years, with aloe vera's bactericidal, virucidal and anti-inflammatory effects backed by numerous scientfic studies into aloe's dental benefits.

Dr. Wolfe has developed several oral hygiene products based on whole-leaf aloe vera including the "Aloe Vera Oral Gel", "Dr. Wolfe's Energized Toothpaste" as well as his flagship product "Dr. Wolfe's Naturally Enhanced Toothpaste", with the latter also including a number of homeopathic herbal preparations.

Special note: Dr. Wolfe's dental care products incorporate what he describes as the "Good Energy Technology" - a proprietary technique of "frequency infusion" said to energize products to a higher level of performance.

A similar (in fact, possibly the same) technique is used for instance in the range of dietary supplements sold under the Baseline Nutritionals label. While this type of energetic enhancement so far has not been endorsed by any official body, there is evidence that it is based in fact.

Pyralvex

Active ingredients: rhubarb extract and salicyclic acid. Helpful with dental and oral pain, particularly periodontitis, inflamed periodontal pockets, mouth ulcers and denture irritation. Apply with the included brush to the affected gums or inject the solution via applicator or oral irrigator into the gum pockets.

Effective at reducing infections and inflammation and reportedly fast-working, with pain subsiding within seconds to two minutes at most; "even the worst type of periodontitis will yield within two to four days if Pyralvex is religiously applied two to three times a day".

Not suitable for individuals under 16 years of age or those allergic to salicylates such as aspirin.

Chlorella growth factor (CGF)

Chlorella growth factor is extracted from the algal organism chlorella. In a scientific study conducted on children during a period of six years, CFG has been shown to prevent cavities, tooth decay and dental/jaw misalignment (overbite etc.) More

Fangocur curative toothpaste

Developed for swollen and/or bleeding gums (gingivitis), dental plaque, periodontitis/pyorrhoea and bad breath (halitosis), this toothpaste contains bentonite[1] (healing clay) and organically grown or wild-crafted essential oils such as Melissa officinalis, Simmondsia chinensis, Krameria triandra, Citrus sinensis, Melaleuca alternifolia, Mentha arvensis, Thymus vulgaris, Salvia officinalis, Curcuma xanthorrhiza, Mimusops elengi.

Fangocur mouthwash has a similar composition and additionally is said to treat mouth ulcers and injuries to the oral mucosa.

Chewing sticks with medicinal properties

See Natural toothbrush alternatives.

Dr. Schulze's "Tooth & Gum Restore Formula"

Anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, this formula contains white oak bark, bayberry root bark, echinacea angustifolia root, tea tree oil, peppermint oil and habanero pepper.

Its therapeutic action is described as increasing circulation to teeth and gums, and with regular use, rebuilding tooth bone loss, tightening teeth and gums, and stopping the bleeding of gums caused by plaque buildup and gingivitis. Also "will destroy oral infections on contact".

For best results, it is advised to apply with a water pic at the strongest setting you are able to tolerate.

Herbal mouthwash for periodontal disease
developed by Victor Zeines, DDS

Described as the fruit of 20 years of work, holistic dentist Victor Zeines' herbal rinse is formulated with echinacea, goldenseal, bloodroot, calendula, aloe and grapefruit seed.

Reportedly a preliminary study was able to show that twice-daily use of the mouthwash led to a 50 percent reduction in dental plaque, with gum pockets decreased by 1 to 2 mm and less bleeding.

Glyco-Thymoline: mouthwash, gargle, personal hygiene

A formulation based on Edgar Cayce, Glyco-Thymoline is an alkaline cleansing solution containing eucalyptol, menthol, pine oil, thymol, alcohol 4%, glycerin, sodium borate, sodium benzoate, sodium bicarbonate, carmine, sodium and methyl salicylate.

Used as a spray, rinse or gargle, diluted or full strength, and apparently gentle enough to be used on babies' bottoms.

Vademecum mouthwash

A relatively natural blend of water, alcohol (31% by volume), sorbitol, coconut oil, menthol, peppermint oil, clove oil, sodium benzoate, chamomile oil and sage (the blue colour is likely due to a colouring agent added).

Black walnut tincture

One of the staple ingredients in Dr. Hulda Clark's herbal parasite cleanse, black walnut tincture is also used for remineralizing teeth.

Oralive Dental Regenerative Elixir

An organic nutritional supplement developed by www.ascendedhealth.com which judging by testimonials received, helps teeth and gums to heal themselves (product is swallowed after initially absorbing the nutrients contained through one's gum mucosa). Likely benefits include inhibition of bacteria that cause tooth decay, gum pain, plaque and gingivitis, alleviation of gum pain and bleeding as well as teeth whitening. Apparently has helped some users who were scheduled for root canal treatment to avoid this noxious procedure.

NOTE: My order from this company never arrived here in Germany. Since I had ordered many products from various US companies (from books up to tape cassettes worth c. 600 US$) before, ALL of which had arrived safe and sound, I had asked for "normal" shipment (10 US$) rather than their recommended 40 USD shipment.

This is the first item ever which after ordering it from the US never arrived, for reasons unknown. I will not order again (one of the staff was unfriendly as well).

Tooth & Gums Tonic® (by Dental Herb Company) and Nature's Answer PerioWash Oral Rinse

These are both alcohol-free mouthwashes formulated with a number of organic herbs but in a glycerine base (compare Dental health prerequisite number 7). They both promise to promote dental health by reducing oral bacteria. A site visitor commented that they worked well in controlling infection and pain.

The impressive number of ®s and even ™s appearing in the formulae also promise an overpriced product, however.

OraMD

contains peppermint, spearmint, and almond oils. Guaranteed "to kill all 22 known types of harmful, anaerobic bacteria that occur naturally in the mouth". Healing Teeth Naturally received a comment, quote "I use this product for a 6 month and didn't see any amelioration of my condition".

I am sure the same is true for a number of other products, although this one may be particularly "overhyped".

"The Answer" Liquid All Natural Tooth Paste Substitute

This is a non-herbal product developed by a dentist and mostly comprised of US-sourced xylitol.

"The Answer" is described as helping to fight tooth decay and gum disease and as a non-toxic, non-alcoholic, safe-to-swallow, USF grade complete oral health care solution.

Among other things said to help prevent mouth sores, dry mouth and apthous ulcers, it is also available as "The Answer® Gel". Patented (which typically means high price) as well as "clinically proven to improve oral health".

Footnotes

1 More on bentonite under Bentonite clay for swelling & pain in gums & teeth.

2 This may be not uncommon. For other (much less expensive) ways in which various people have healed their serious gum disease, see Personal experiences & testimonials.

3 Salt and salt water by themselves can benefit teeth and gums. Compare my best toothache cure and Toothpaste alternatives.

4 Caveat: You may wish to abstain from taking any iodine orally if you carry amalgam fillings in your mouth. As shown for instance in the study "Effect of iodine on mercury concentrations in dental-unit wastewater" (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16002132), iodine can mobilize mercury from dental amalgam. The resulting (temporarily) higher and potentially dangerous dissolved mercury concentrations in your mouth could expose you to an unnecessary (additional) risk.
